Soil algae for combating soil degradation – greenhouse experiment with different soil amendments

Context Our research contributes to the knowledge of using soil algae combat degradation. Aims We tested green (Klebsormidium flaccidum) and a field community in 3-month greenhouse experiment studied their performance on two substrates: (1) sand from Ordos Desert; (2) artificial desert (washed sand). Methods A rapid fluorescence microscopy-Image J method was developed estimate abundance algae. effects four amendments (biochar, clay, organic matter, geohumus) development algae, biological crusts. Key results The preferred washed sand. All had positive effect K. flaccidum Biological crusts were generally lower control matter treatments, but relatively higher biochar clay treatments. No relationship between algal crust stability found this short-term experiment. Conclusions quantitatively estimated aunder different conditions, providing an indirect indicator growth status. Implications This can be used make recommendations studies.
